Challenge
Drunk driving kills nearly 34 people every day in the United States, yet decades of fear-based awareness campaigns have failed to meaningfully change behavior among young adults, the highest-risk group. The designated driver is culturally invisible at best, and at worst seen as the person missing out. No existing solution speaks the language of the audience it most needs to reach: social, peer-influenced, digitally native young adults for whom a night out is tied to identity and belonging.
Insight
Fear does not motivate this audience; status does. Peer influence is already the dominant force shaping drinking behavior among 18 to 34 year olds, which means it can be redirected. If the designated driver could be repositioned not as the sacrifice but as the hero of the night, recognized, rewarded, and culturally celebrated, the responsible choice becomes the desirable one. The goal is not to pull people out of the night. It is to give them a better reason to stay in it sober.
Answer
Keys to the Night is a two-part system that reframes the designated driver as an empowered, socially valued role. The social campaign raises awareness through social media, campus activations, and bar and club partnerships, building cultural legitimacy around the DD identity. Keyro, the companion app, turns safe decisions into a game, rewarding users with Hero Points, badges, leaderboards, ride credits, and merchandise for stepping up and keeping their crew safe. Together, they create a cohesive ecosystem that shifts the conversation from fear to empowerment, making responsibility feel relevant, fun, and worth showing off.
